Holistic Remedies for Tummy Trouble

Well, seeing as I’m writing this while battling a gnarly case of food poisoning or a stomach bug…

I know I know, my first blog post coming back from a short hiatus is probably supposed to be chock full of inspiration and peaceful yogi vibes. I’m probably supposed to leave you all with sage wisdom from my mat or the latest and greatest self help book to be added to my bookshelf. I should probably be quoting Rumi or Deepak Chopra or that one chick on Instagram with over 3 million followers.

But, as they say, shit happens.

These are some of my tried and true holistic tips for combatting stomach issues. I know this because I’m trying them all right this very second…

*insert smiling poop emoji here*

#1 Essential Oils

My first line of defense against an upset stomach always includes essential oils. My favorites include peppermint, spearmint, eucalyptus, and blends specially formulated to ease cramps, bloating, gas, and other unspeakable tummy issues.

My absolute favorite pre-mixed blend is DigestZen by doTERRA. You can snag a bottle for yourself here!

#2 Restorative Yoga Poses

Restorative yoga brings so much peace to my life, and one of the biggest benefits has been in aiding digestion. I suffer from a gluten intolerance and let me tell you, there is no greater hell than being allergic to bread when you live in the land of pizza and bagels…

Best poses for easing digestion:

  • Legs Up The Wall
  • Legs Up The Wall with Malasana Leg Variation
  • Side-Lying Child’s Pose with a bolster
  • Supported Belly Press (aka “Boogie Board”)

#3 Cool Compress with Eucalyptus and Peppermint

The best cure for some post-nausea dizziness? A cool wash cloth with a couple drops of eucalyptus and peppermint oils. Seriously, trust me.

#4 Rest, Rest, Rest

When all else fails, rest. Set your phone to ‘Do Not Disturb’ and treat yourself to some much deserved downtime. One of my favorite yoga teachers once said that illness and injury are not something negative…they are simply healings. So, instead of saying, “Sorry I can’t, I’m sick” she changes the script to, “I’m going through a healing. Thank you for your compassion.”

Hmm, looks like a little sage wisdom crept in after all…
