About

Namaste! My name is Elizabeth LaVelle Murray-Merchant and I am the proud founder & sole contributor to The Yogi Lawyer. I currently work as a writer, ERYT-200 certified yoga instructor & Reiki Master in New York City with my amazing family, a corgi pup and a betta fish named Matsya (or, as my fiancรฉ calls him, “Motzie”)…and I owe it all to the practice of yoga.

How I Got Here…

I wasn’t always this zen. Far from it actually. Long before I was meditating twice a day or snackin’ on some kale chips (don’t worry, I still love New York pizza as much as the next gal), I was pulling all-nighters as a corporate lawyer.

I had spent the vast majority of my life working towards the dream of becoming a lawyer. And, after graduating from law school, passing the bar exam in two states, and landing a job at a prestigious firm in Boston, I thought I had it all…

Turns out, I couldn’t have been more wrong. I was lost, scared, and suffering from anxiety and panic attacks nearly every day. I started searching for something, anything, that could ease the stress of my legal career and decided to give yoga another go. My yoga practices both on and off the mat eventually lead to my decision to leave private practice for good and…wait for it…become a yoga teacher.

I enrolled in a 200-hour teacher training and, in no time at all, was on my way. I started immersing myself in the world of yoga, picked up a few teaching slots, became a Reiki Master, and on one seemingly random day…started a blog to write about it all. Expecting my only readers to be my mom and my then-boyfriend, you can imagine my surprise when I started receiving emails from folks all around the world. I kept on writing, started contributing to other publications and, as the saying goes, the rest is history…

I did it, and so can you! Welcome to The Yogi Lawyer.
